“I knew I wanted to use cloth nappies before I had a baby. I remember seeing a poster of a huge pile of used disposable nappies from just one child, and knew I didn’t want to be responsible for that. And I don’t think my kids would want that either.
When my son was born he spent the first 2 weeks in eco-disposables, then used our voucher to trial a nappy laundry service. I’d bought a variety of pre-loved nappies online and tried out different ones as and when I felt ready.
We live on a boat, so the amount of water and electricity we can use is limited. It was tricky at first, but we found a system that works for us and are still going strong. As my boy grew I found different types of nappies to suit us, mostly secondhand through the give-and-take days or online.
I won’t pretend we’re 100% committed to cloth nappies every day. There are times when we do use disposables (illness, some holidays) but I really believe every little helps. Even if I only used a couple of washables per day that could still be 800 nappies ‘saved’ by the time a child is potty trained.”
